Li-llāhi nahrun sāla fī baṭḥāʔi

لِلَّهِ نَهرٌ سالَ في بَطحاءِ
أَشهى وُروداً مِن لِمى الحَسناءِ

مُتَعَطِّفٌ مِثلَ السِوارِ كَأَنَّهُ
وَالزَهرُ يَكنُفُهُ مَجَرُّ سَماءِ

قَد رَقَّ حَتّى ظُنَّ قُرصاً مُفرَغاً
مِن فَضَّةٍ في بُردَةٍ خَضراءِ

وَغَدَت تَحُفُّ بِهِ الغُصونُ كَأَنَّها
هُدبٌ يَحُفُّ بِمُقلَةٍ زَرقاءِ

وَلَطالَما عاطَيتُ فيهِ مُدامَةً
صَفراءَ تَخضِبُ أَيدِيَ النُدَماءِ

وَالريحُ تَعبَثُ بِالغُصونِ وَقَد جَرى
ذَهَبُ الأَصيلِ عَلى لُجَينِ الماءِ

Bei Gott, welch ein Fluss, er fließt in dem Tal!
Seine Blüte[2] ist lieblich[1] wie die ros'gen Lippen eines Mädchens[3]

Er biegt sich und windet so wie ein Armeif, als ob ers wär
er ist umgeben von Blumen, so wie die Sterne den Planeten[4]

Er ist so sanft und so zart so wie Kopfschmuck[5] geschmolzen
aus Silber bestehend in einem Mantel aus grün

Er[6] dient dem Geäste das umgebend den Fluss
ist wie lang-wimprige Zweige um die blauen Augen des Mädchens

Und oft hab' ich mich dort verloren im Wein
gelb-süßlicher Wein, der färbt die Hände[7] des Trinkers

Der Wind spielt mit den Zweigen und darin dort fließt
gold-glühender Abend auf silbrigem Wasser

[2] The appearance of the river springing forth is likened to the blossoming of a flower.
[3] The poet, in this poem on nature, describes a river and nature in general in anthropomorphising terms, particularly likening it to a girl with red lips and blue eyes.
[4] e.g. the river bends, winds, and curves like a bracelet wrapping around the wrist, it is surrounded on all sides by flowers, and the flowers are likened to the stars revolving around the planet in the sky - or the Milky Way galaxy.
[5] Qurṣ: Disk of metal used as a head-ornament for women - suspended from a chain worn around the head, a headdress of Arabian origin worn by women.
